Doom 2016: A Brutal, Arcade-Inspired FPS That Brings Hell to Mars! A Review
Updated: Nov 10
Doom is a brutal fast-paced FPS arcade shooter with a good and unique story that pits you against the forces of hell itself... on Mars?!
A Modern Twist in a Hellish Mars Setting
The fast-paced FPS style reminds you of an arcade shooter, but with all the different weapons, finishers, and options, it has an additional modern feel to it which I believe made a great addition to an older classic like it's predecessors. The story is intriguing and the brutal world encapsulates you quickly. The game sets you into this demonic rendition of Mars that already begs the question of why the Demons are on Mars, and how did this happened. This sort of interesting environment is a good game design and story choice to intrigue the player, and they did a fantastic job.
Doom 2016's Soundtrack is Pure Adrenaline
The music, you might as well inject me with bull sperm and Ecstasy, cause the music is like a rave mixed with this masculine undertone of total brutality as you swing and shoot your way through demons. The music even stops while you are executing to allow the full gore sound effects to play, and then it quickly resumes. Everything is crafted with intention and a clear passion for the Doom Franchise, a breath of fresh air from most modern games.
Performance
Doom 2016 ran on max settings at 1440p on a AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D and RTX 4080. It can run on high settings on a GTX 970, and runs buttery smooth on modern hardware.
Conclusion
Doom is a masterclass in reviving a classic. The relentless action, intense music, and atmosphere come together to create an experience that feels both classic and new. From the hellish Mars setting to the soundtrack, it drives home the passion behind this game. It goes to show why Doom has been loved for decades, always standing above other FPS titles. For fans of fast-paced story shooters or anyone wanting a high-energy experience, Doom is an absolute must-play.
