Skydance's Behemoth Set to Redefine VR Gaming with Colossal Battles and Story-Driven Exploration
Updated: 1 hour ago
Behemoth, the upcoming VR title from Skydance Interactive, is poised to bring an epic scale and intensity to VR gaming when it launches on December 5, 2024, for PS VR2, Meta Quest, and Steam platforms. Known for their groundbreaking VR work on The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, Skydance is taking immersive, physics-driven combat to the next level with Behemoth, where players will confront enormous beasts and uncover a richly detailed, cursed world.
Epic VR Battles and a Tragic World of Giants
Set in the Forsaken Lands, a haunting realm devastated by a mysterious curse, players assume the role of a warrior on a mission to eradicate the powerful Behemoths responsible for this affliction. These behemoths are no ordinary adversaries; they tower over players, requiring tactical grappling and climbing to target vulnerable points on their massive bodies. Drawing inspiration from games like Shadow of the Colossus, Behemoth seeks to capture the feeling of battling mountains in motion, made visceral in VR. According to Skydance’s Game Director, Brian Murphy:
“Everything in this game is designed relative to the Behemoths. It’s important that players are awed by the size and scale of each boss”
Beyond combat, Behemoth promises a deeply layered story told through the environment itself, drawing from influences like Fallout: New Vegas. Scattered across the Forsaken Lands are weapons, relics, and remains of long-dead warriors, each holding fragments of the land’s tragic history. Skydance has also released a graphic novel to complement the game, adding more backstory to the setting and characters players will encounter.
To navigate this harsh terrain and fend off both Behemoths and hostile human enemies, players are equipped with a versatile grappling hook. This tool allows players to scale cliffs, pull distant weapons, and gain a strategic edge in combat. Additionally, a unique “superhuman strength” mechanic linked to the curse empowers players temporarily, giving them the power to perform finishing moves, break through defenses, and turn the tide in battle. Chief Technologist Peter T. Akemann noted that Behemoth expands on the combat mechanics developed in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, enhancing them with new levels of detail and physicality.
Skydance Behemoth has carefully crafted Behemoth for VR, aiming to maintain immersion while mitigating motion sickness issues. The game’s first-person perspective lets players experience intense moments up close, like clinging to a Behemoth’s limb as it tries to shake them off. With pre-release buzz already drawing comparisons to some of gaming’s most iconic monster battles, Behemoth is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious VR titles to date, giving players a blend of high-stakes exploration, environmental storytelling, and adrenaline-pumping combat
As anticipation builds, players can look forward to donning their VR headsets and stepping into the shadow of giants when Behemoth releases this December.
