Is Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 worth it? Review
Updated: 3 days ago
Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 is a delightful Co-Op action game with a well-written story and satisfying gameplay, and it is the best Warhammer game you can play on Steam. However, there were many missed opportunities.
Strong Story and Satisfying Gameplay Shine Despite Lacking Character Animations
The visuals are great, I wouldn't say they are the best, because the character and facial animations are a bit lacking, but the environments are fantastic. The story is the shining part of the game, it's well-written, the actors and VA's sound top-notch, and the gameplay is very satisfying.
Missed Gameplay Opportunities
There are too many cutscenes, and I feel the developers played it too safe when it came to gameplay. For example, in a mission where we thought we'd ride on a tank, instead was just a teleport to the place, a very missed opportunity and we were all disappointed that we couldn't do it. On the performance side of things, the game was reviewed on PC with a 4080 and AMD Ryzen 7900X3D on max settings 1440p. In the early campaign, I upgraded from an I9-9900k and got significant performance increases. To my surprise, Space Marine 2 seems to be very CPU demanding.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while the visuals impress with rich environments, the character and facial animations leave room for improvement. The story truly stands out, brought to life by skilled actors and high-quality voice acting, and the gameplay is engaging and well-crafted. However, the over-reliance on cutscenes and some missed gameplay opportunities suggest that the developers may have not wanted to go beyond the scope they setout with a third person shooter. Despite these shortcomings, it’s an experience worth playing for its storytelling and gameplay.
